What You Should Know About Invisalign

What You Should Know About Invisalign

You heard a friend mention "Invisalign" as she talked about her dental care. Curious, you asked what she was discussing and learned that invisalignInvisalign is a leading-edge orthodontic system which straightens teeth without brackets, wires, or rubber bands. Surprisingly, you also learned your friend was wearing Invisalign clear aligners from Ruland Family Dentistry in Annapolis, MD. Read more about getting a perfect smile the discreet Invisalign way.

Why do adults and teens get orthodontic care?

Maybe the answer should be "Why not?" Everyone deserves a healthy smile that's attractive and functional. So, more and more patients of non-traditional age (most orthodontic care starts between ages 10 and 14, reports KidsHealth) have begun exploring their orthodontic options.

While many smiles require conventional metal, ceramic or lingual (tongue-side) braces, others do not, and in fact, millions of people have straightened their mild to moderate issues with Invisalign since the late 1990s. Using a customized set of clear acrylic appliances, Drs. Louis, Michael, and John Ruland deliver new smiles to people with:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Openbite
  • Crowding
  • Gaps
  • Overjet
  • Orthodontic relapse (teeth which shift after braces are removed)

Treatment times are substantially shorter (an average of one year) than with conventional braces. The appliances are comfortable, smooth, and removable, and both teens and adults feel no embarrassment or inconvenience as they advance through their care plans. Truly, treatment with Invisalign in Annapolis is a win-win situation.

Qualifying for and living with Invisalign

During an orthodontic consultation at Ruland Family Dentistry, your dentist will examine your teeth and take X-rays and a special three-dimensional scan. If treatment is feasible, Dr. Ruland uses the scan and other details to tell the Invisalign lab how to craft your aligners for each important step on your way to a new smile.

In all, you'll receive 18 to 30 aligner pairs, wearing each for about two weeks. It's important to keep the aligners in place for 20 to 22 hours per day, taking them out to eat, brush, and floss. Teen aligners may be crafted with compliance tabs to show doctor, parents, and patient how treatment is progressing.

When you complete your care plan, you'll probably wear a retainer--also crafted by Invisalign--to keep your new smile perfectly placed.
