Restoring Your Dental Implants

Restoring Your Dental Implants

Dental implants are not only becoming the most popular way to replace missing teeth, but they are also the best option. Although they may not be the least expensive tooth replacement, in the long-term they are the most cost-effective because of their strength and durability. Dr. John Ruland and Dr. Michael Ruland are dentists at Ruland Family Dentistry in Annapolis, MD. They offer full family dental services including implant restoration.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is made up of three individual components:

  • A titanium post: This is implanted directly into the gum. Over time the gum fuses with the titanium, holding the post securely in place. This acts like the root of a natural tooth.
  • An abutment: This is attached to the post enabling a crown to be attached.
  • A porcelain crown: A crown is attached to the abutment to replace your missing tooth. The crown will match the shape, size, and color of your existing teeth exactly.

What are The Advantages of Dental Implants?

Annapolis dental patients choose dental implants for the following reasons:

  • They are permanent
  • They look real
  • They are easy to maintain
  • They are strong and durable
  • They enable you to eat and speak normally
  • They promote healthy jawbone growth
  • They feel just like natural teeth

How Do I Get Dental Implants?

There are several stages to dental implantation. These include:

  • An oral evaluation: During your consultation with Dr. Ruland, you will discuss your dental goals and your oral and overall health. Dr. Ruland will also explain what is involved with dental implant restoration.
  • Bone grafts: If your jawbone structure is weak, Dr. Ruland may recommend jawbone grafting prior to dental implantation.
  • Dental implant placement: Dr. Ruland will ensure that you do not feel any discomfort during the implant procedure. Because the titanium posts take several months to bond with your jawbone. You will be provided with temporary crowns, to enable Dr. Ruland to make sure that the posts are firmly in place when you return for your permanent crowns.
